30 Years of Transformation: The Monastery Manchester Marks Milestone Year with Industry Recognition

2026 will be a landmark year for The Monastery Manchester, as the charitable trust that saved it from ruin celebrates its 30th anniversary. That’s three decades of regeneration, community impact and the careful restoration of one of the city’s most remarkable heritage venues.

The Monastery was originally a 19th century Franciscan friary designed by E.W. Pugin, and has been transformed from a near-derelict site into a thriving, multi-purpose destination. Today it is a popular venue within Manchester’s growing business events sector for conferences, corporate events, awards ceremonies and private functions, as well as hosting a full calendar of cultural and wellbeing activities.

It’s also been a year of industry recognition, with The Monastery recently awarded ‘Leading Live Venue 2025’ at the This is Manchester Awards, and featured in regional press coverage celebrating the city’s leading organisations.

Reflecting on the anniversary year, Chief Executive, Elaine Griffiths, OBE said:

“Reaching our 30th anniversary is a moment of real reflection for us. The Monastery’s journey has always been about creating a place where people can come together, whether for business, celebration or community. To receive industry recognition in the same year is incredibly meaningful, and a testament to the dedication of our team and the continued support of our clients and partners.”

The venue’s main space is the Great Nave, an architecturally impressive, cathedral-like room blending historic architecture with modern production facilities. The Monastery provides a distinctive venue for organisers seeking something beyond the conventional conference setting, backed by a vastly experienced in-house team and flexible event delivery.

As Manchester continues to solidify its position as a top UK destination for meetings and events, The Monastery is a powerful example of how heritage, purpose and innovation can come together to create spaces that enable connection, creativity and impact.
