We’re delighted to announce that The Monastery Manchester has become the first organisation in Manchester to achieve Level 3 Trauma Responsive accreditation through Manchester City Council’s Trauma Responsive Manchester programme.
While the title may sound a little technical, the idea behind it is beautifully simple.
What Does Trauma Responsive Mean?
At its heart, being trauma responsive means creating places where people feel safe, welcome, respected and able to be themselves.
It means understanding that everyone carries their own life experiences, challenges and stories. It also means designing our spaces, activities and services with kindness, compassion and inclusion at their heart.
Manchester City Council developed the Trauma Responsive Manchester programme to help organisations build safe, supportive and inclusive spaces. These spaces promote wellbeing, reduce social isolation and help people develop confidence, resilience and a sense of belonging.
The programme recognises organisations that embed these values into their culture and everyday activities.
Creating Spaces Where People Feel Welcome
For many years, this approach has quietly shaped everything we do at the Monastery.
Whether someone joins a wellbeing session, volunteers in the gardens, attends a community group, visits our café, explores our heritage or simply drops in for a moment of peace, we strive to create an environment where people feel seen, valued and connected.
As a result, many people find friendship, support and a sense of belonging through the Monastery community.
Achieving Level 3, the highest level of accreditation, recognises organisations that have fully embedded trauma responsive principles throughout their culture and ways of working.
It reflects a commitment to creating welcoming environments where people can build trust, find support and help shape the services they use.
The Difference It Makes
The accreditation process highlighted the impact of many of the Monastery’s community programmes.
From the Men’s Shed and men’s mental health groups to our gardening and wellbeing projects, participants spoke about increased confidence, improved mental wellbeing, stronger social connections and a renewed sense of purpose.
One participant described the Men’s Shed as giving him “hope again” after years of isolation and helping him feel valued after years of feeling invisible.
Another reflected on the friendships, belonging and personal growth they experienced through volunteering in the Monastery’s award-winning gardens.
These stories remind us that creating welcoming spaces is about much more than programmes and activities.
Instead, it is about helping people build confidence, find community and reconnect with a sense of purpose.
Leading the Way in Manchester
As the first organisation in Manchester to achieve Level 3 Trauma Responsive accreditation, we are proud to be helping to lead the way in creating communities where people feel safe, supported and able to thrive.
Trust Manager, Viv Andrews, said:
“We’re incredibly proud to be the first organisation in Manchester to receive Level 3 Trauma Response accreditation. This recognition reflects the care, kindness and dedication shown every day by our staff, volunteers and community.“
For us, this recognition is not a finish line but an affirmation of the values that have guided the Monastery for many years.
We are deeply grateful to our staff, volunteers, partners and visitors who help make the Monastery such a welcoming and compassionate place.
Together, we continue to build a community where everyone can find connection, belonging and hope.
